Under the marketing name Irish Sea Airways, Aer Lingus began operations in 1936 in conjunction with Blackpool & West Coast Air Services on flights between the Republic of Ireland and the U.K.
Aerlínte Éireann was formed in 1947 to start transatlantic flights, though these were postponed until 1958. The airline worked closely with Aer Lingus throughout its existence; the two airlines were colloquially known as Irish Air Lines or Irish International Airlines. Aerlínte Éireann was eventually completely merged into Aer Lingus.
Timetables from 1958 until the late 1970s are joint Aer Lingus/Aerlínte Éireann timetables, though Aerlínte Éireann's name seldom appeared on the covers. The use of its flight designator IN was gone by 1978. |
