Braathens SAFE (Braathens South American & Far East Air Transport) was founded in 1946, initially operating charter services to South America and Asia. Three years later the airline opened a scheduled route to Hong Kong, which had to be shut down in 1954 due to the Norwegian Government's obligations to SAS. Instead, the airline developed its charter activities and built up a Norwegian domestic network, with European scheduled services added in the 1990s. The latter 1990s saw the airline being linked to KLM through part-ownership. During this period, Braathens dropped the SAFE suffix and also acquired two Swedish mainly domestic operators, Transwede and Malmö Aviation.
Braathens was taken over by the SAS Group in 2001 and merged with the Norwegian part of SAS in 2004 to form SAS Braathens, from 2007 known as SAS Scandinavian Airlines Norge. It ceased to exist as a separate company in 2009, from then on just being the Norwegian part of SAS. |
